About Jay J. Patel, MD

Dr. Patel is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in Total Joint Replacement and Adult Reconstructive Surgery. His area of expertise includes both primary and revision surgical procedures of the hip and knee. He also brings expertise in new surgical techniques including minimally invasive surgical procedures, anterior approach hip replacement surgery, computer navigation, as well as robotic joint replacement.

Dr. Patel earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard University where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He then went on to earn both a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and his Medical Doctorate from Stanford University. While at Stanford, Dr. Patel was actively involved in research pertaining to computer navigation systems for joint replacement surgery and also assisted in designing multiple orthopedic surgical devices as a member of the Stanford Biodesign Innovation Program.

Dr. Patel subsequently completed his Orthopaedic Surgical Residency at the University of California, Irvine, under the guidance of Dr. Robert Gorab and Dr. Steven Barnett. After residency, he completed a fellowship in Adult Reconstruction, Arthritis, and Joint Replacement Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City. This institution was recently voted the #1 rated Orthopaedic Hospital in the nation according to US News and World Report. While at HSS, Dr. Patel trained under several world renowned orthopedic surgeons including Drs. Chitranjan Ranawat, Thomas Sculco, and Eduardo Salvati.

Dr. Patel is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. He has published on multiple areas of orthopedic research, including computer navigation systems for total joint replacement, revision of complex hip and knee replacement surgery and orthopedic clinical outcomes.

Dr. Jay Patel is an attending surgeon at both Hoag Orthopaedic Institute in Irvine as well as St. Joseph’s Hospital in Orange. Dr. Patel enjoys spending time with his wife and young children as well as cycling, hiking, and skiing.
